Lily Pad: Floating Active Solar Farm
As a leader in my 4th year capstone project, I organized and delegated the design process of a five member team to investigate the viability of a floating solar farm idea proposed by industry partner, Humpback Hydro. I ensured proper timelines were met and provided guidence to members who were struggling with their roles. Technically I was responsible for preliminary hydrodynamics and buoyancy considerations as well as the Solidworks design showccased to the left.
Process
This year long project involved the full design process that began with initial design descussions with out advisor. Once a scope was decided, initial designs and preliminary proof-of-concept calculations were conducted. The first designs were developed before testing led to multiple cycles of re-design. When a final design was reached, thourough evaluation of structural, environmental, and economical viability was conducted.
Challenges
Project challenges invoved client-designer scope misunderstandings in which our advisor would increase requests as the year went on. This taught me a lot about the importance of clear communication with clients. Furthermore, we faced challenges as while we considered multiple design options to properly evaluate all options, it was difficult to know at what stage to reduce to one design.
Learning Outcomes
The following are the skills I developed most:
- SOLIDWorks: Developed my modeling experience, including design work, material and strength considerations, and proper evaluation.
- Research: Developed my ability to use resources in determining the required scope of project work.
- Collaboration: Bettered my ability to find a proper balance between leadership and guidance versus delegation and individual work.
